How long does a Power of Attorney last?

A General Power of Attorney lasts until is it revoked or until you lose mental capacity or die. Unless there is a limitation on an Enduring Power of Attorney it continues until it is revoked or by death of the Donor. The Enduring Power of Attorney can be revoked by the Donor, the Attorney or the relevant government body.

With an Enduring Power of Attorney each Attorney’s power is also revoked if they are declared bankrupt, resign, die or lose mental capacity. In these circumstances, if you have appointed more than one Attorney, the Enduring Power of Attorney still enables the remaining Attorney to act on your behalf.
